In Conversation with Kylie Fritas

The Suite Reyad co-founder and colorist on hair health, the myths worth unlearning, and what's next for the brand.

Kylie Fritas has spent her career with her hands in hair — first as a colorist, and now as co-founder of Suite Reyad, the clean luxury line she built alongside Reyad Fritas. As the brand grows across its salons and steps into new rooms this year, we sat down with Kylie to talk about what she sees at the chair every day: the concerns clients bring in, the myths she has spent years correcting, and where she believes hair care is headed.

What is the number one concern you hear from clients about their hair?

Hair loss and dryness, without question.

What is the single most important hair-health tip you can give us?

Be consistent with good products — ones that nourish the scalp and the hair. Every so often, do a deep conditioning treatment and get a small trim. And brush your hair every morning and night; it stimulates the scalp.

How do you predict hair care will change and evolve?

More and more health-conscious. Natural hair care and clean products won't be a luxury — they'll be a necessity.

Do you see a difference between American and European hair-care standards?

Europe has always leaned more natural — the products, the style — and we're inching toward that now. But America took the knowledge of hair care and its applications and pushed it further in so many ways. We've always been innovators.

What are a few hair myths you know to be false?

That washing your hair too often is bad — it's a myth. Cleansing the scalp actually lets the follicles flourish; buildup creates blockage. As long as your shampoo isn't stripping the scalp of its nutrients, you can wash every day if you need to.

What are some of your favorite brands right now?

Suite Reyad, obviously. Beyond that, a few I love: Régime des Fleurs and Rohé.

The world is a stressful place. How does stress affect hair health, and what can we do to help it?

Stress absolutely wreaks havoc on hair — it leaves it weak. If you're going through a stressful stretch, take it easy on your hair: soft brushing, scalp stimulation, gentle products, and plenty of The Cure. The Cure is made with ingredients like organic date seed oil, proline, and glycine — all of which help with strength.

What is happening with Suite Reyad this year, and what does the future look like for the brand?

Suite Reyad is thriving across all three locations. This year we'll be popping up in a few surprise places — all while growing this line we love. We're getting so many requests for lifestyle additions, too, so watch this space.
